MM2H - Tax Free Car 2 Years, 11 Months ago Karma: 9
There are a lot of rumours about bringing your car in under the MM2H. I know it's possible but can anyone list all the conditions.

E.g. Do you have to own the car for 6 months? Does it have to come from your country of origin? Can you sell the car without paying any taxes after 2 years?

Also, does anyone know how painful or easy the process is?

Further what are the costs of owning a large-engined car in Malaysia? For example, if you have a 5 litre car, what taxes do you pay on an annual basis?

Thanks

I've been looking into the mm2h and car purchase options, and here's the most accurate information (from the govt websites) I can find on it:

- Application to IMPORT a motorcar from the participant’s country of citizenship/last domicile must be done within a period of six months from
the date the MM2H visa is endorsed on his/her passport. The condition for such importation is that the MM2H participant should be the owner of the
motorcar prior to obtaining the MM2H visa, as evidenced in the motorcar registration document.

- An Application to PURCHASE a new motorcar made or assembled in Malaysia must be done within a period of one year from the date the MM2H visa is endorsed on his/her passport. Do not make an outright purchase of the motorcar before obtaining approval for tax/duty exemption from the Treasury. However, a booking for a motorcar may be made prior to obtaining approval from the Treasury.

- Tax/Duty exempted motorcars which are subsequently sold or transferred will be subjected to import duty, excise duty and sales tax according to the prevailing rates.

From speaking to friends who have done it, if you are importing you must own the car *before* they approve the application - you have 6m then to bring it in. It is generally hassle-free, but note on the big engined cars (large than 4.0l) you are talking RM15K+ a year on road tax so be warned! Insurance is pretty cheap though.

If you sell, you have to pay tax but at the current rate, not at the rate you would've paid at import/purchase, and after a minimum of 2 years.
