As far as I known, there are some rules set by authorities or government for renovation purpose. For example there are border from which to which, cannot go over the drain, etc.

It looks like different local authorities have different strict rules they follow. Certain locality I see are not so strict and yet other locality are so petty.

My suggestion is to re-confirm the rules with the local authority where your house renovation takes place.

There are rules for legal renovation..depend on type of residential or commercial to renovate..let say a terrace house corner lot..you cant extend your house till the fence..you must leave at least 10 ft of your land from the fence..for high rise (flat,condo,apartment etc..) you must colour your extension building with the original colour of your house..and you need to refer to residential management for rules and regulations..

Besides, you need to apply CF from local council..you may go through the contractor and let them manage it..actually, a lot of rules need to study before starts a renovation..if you need renovation, consultancy or further information, juz contact (PM) me for one stop services (renovation,ladscaping and interior designing)..just leave it to us and we will settle it..

i've seen residential corner being extended almost touching the fence.....

That must have beeen done illegally, right? Malaysia's lack of lawlessness is a real problem.

For Malaysia alone?

Don't we have to notify our neighbours as well when we decide to renovate?
Cause it'll be annoying if I was rudely awaken by the sound of drilling noises.

However I noted that many residents renovate their house extensively. This I was told that they do without submitting for approval for the local council as it would takes a long time for the processing.

Hi Chun,

In my honest opinion, you should get an approval with the authorities. That will protect you in any illegal issues that might come up in the future. Its Better to abide now than face problem later.


With regard to document submissions,...i will just let experienced forumers reply for this....

If it is me, I will only do 2 things.

Firstly, I engage a Contractor to renovate my house.

Secondly, I engage a Resident Engineer to monitor and advise on my behalf.

Basically what I do is that I just forward the floor plan of my house to them,assessment receipt,title and etc etc (Whatever basic documents they need) and they will do the necessary submissions and etc. We are paying them just to get the job done, and I don't think I am willing to run around to get this and that approval done (Perhaps, run around the same place more than once???). Might as well leave it to the experts who do this job.

I think you find some real responsive contractor who are reliable and well organized. I know someone you may contact with the contractor, may be problem can be solve.

I'm getting pissed with my neighbors renovation. I'm staying in a terrace hse n intermediate n this hse is under renovation is also intermediate. It has been going on for a month plus. They have been drilling n breaking d walls and the sound is so loud is as if my house is doing the renovation. So what can I do to reduce the sound? And all these starts every morning at 8am! I have two kids one only 3 months old n the other 3 years old! This is affecting their life n rest! Can I lodge a complain or do something?
