Noisy dwellers at upper unit 1 Year, 8 Months ago Karma: 0
Good day everybody,

The apartment unit that is directly above mine is rented to arabs. The dwellers at that unit love to entertain and whenever there is a meet up (which is very often),there would be many people attending. They would play the music loudly, move around the unit with their high heels and shoes (dancing actually)and drag the furniture around. The noises from these activities really irritate me and it does not stop until past midnight. It is also a habit of theirs to wear their shoes in the unit at all times (the type of shoes that we wear outside the house) and whenever they walk around, each step can be heard at my unit below.

The security guards are of no help as the dwellers would turn a deaf ear on them whenever the guards reprimanded them. Sometimes, I had to personally go up and meet with them but they would just ignore me and carry on with their activities. The Management office has written to them but this is of no effect.

Would appreciate some good advise from readers as to what I can do to rid the nuisance. Thank you

A very difficult situation you're in. And very frustrating because it's something you have to deal with day in day out.

I think most Malaysians just ignore this type of thing. In the UK neighbours are a lot more upfront and willing to argue.

Regarding the shoes I don't think you can do anything. But if the noise is really loud from the music and it happens until late there must be some authority you can write to that will deal with this. Why not speak to the local authority?

What have the other neighbours said? Do they also hear the music? Obviously you're on the unit below but if some other neighbours agree with you it might be worth all of you meeting the neighbour over a coffee. But my advice is always be polite. If you start getting aggressive it will not help your situation. Try telling them how difficult it is for you to sleep rather than being rude to them saying "How dare you put the music on so loud, etc..."

That's why most people prefer landed properties than high rise dwellings.

It's a way to stay away from conflict of interest.

Hi Farin, thank you for your kind words of encouragement. It is so frustrating as I am an owner and they are just tenants and I have to endure their nonsense through no fault of mine. Am considering selling the unit but it is so hard to let it go as I really love the place. Am praying for the best. Thanks again for everything.

It's their house, you definitely cannot tell them to listen to what music or tell them if they can have guests or parties or not!! You're living in a apartment, it's not a retirement home or something like that!! or is it?!

I think you should file for something else directly to the higher management of where you currently live in at and not only the guards. This is because you are being disturbed by such activities of the people you are talking about.

As for noise for loud music, you can try the police to check on your suspicious of "ill event" party. The police will pay a visit to them and at least they will at least turn down the volume. If they refuse the police order they can be penalised for noise pollution (especially in the middle of the night) for disturbing the peace and order by turning on music loudly.
However, seeing the situation you had related, they will continue to irritate you with the shoes issue. The shoes sound is not loud enough to be considered as noise pollution as it will not exceed the pollution decibels.

Doesn't mean landed properties don't have problems either. I had quite a similar but not identical issue on my landed property. It was very peaceful when I moved into my new 2-Storey house 5 years ago. After recent year, more neighbours moved in. Some do blast their expensive sound system loudly as to tell the neighbourhood that they owned expensive home theaters. Things get worst when more neighbours join the "Battle of Home Theaters". Then, there are those that keep dogs as pets. What irritate me most when they walk their dogs and just pretend not to see their dogs drops feces and urinate in front of my gate and car. Some dogs jumped into my lawn and did their business there. I had bad experience stepping on those smelly shit early in the morning while rushing into my car to go to work. Don't they have stool pans for their dogs? What kind of attitude are they having. Try to show that they are being kind to animals but irritate and inconvenient another human being.

I had complained to the municipal council but they did only catch the stray and give advise to the pet owners.I had confronted some of the neighbours when I saw thing happened in front of me. But it continues when I was not around.

So I found the best way out of this problem is to sell away my house and try a new place instead. I am just trying to make this world a better place to live instead of having grudges against those people.

You need to talk to your landlord and let him handle the situation since he is the only person who have the power to kick them out at your unit. And he is also the only person can let your neighbors not do that kind of destruction to you and to other people in your unit.
