PETALING JAYA: The owners of six homes in the Klang Valley have emerged winners in the haven/The Edge My Dream Home Awards 2010.

There were two Gold Award winners in the detached/semi-detached category this year — Francis Lee and Yap Poh Lean for their home in Shah Alam; and Mr and Mrs Anthony Leong for their house in Section 7, Petaling Jaya. The Leongs’ house also bagged the My Green Home Award 2010, a new category introduced this year in recognition of efforts by homeowners to go green. The 1960s architecture and original fittings of the house were maintained and given a new lease of life with the help of architect Dr Tan Loke Mun.

“What is heartening is the overall quality of the entries received. More and more of the designs mirror a deliberate attempt on the part of homeowners, architects and designers alike to go green,” said Dorothy Teoh, editor-in-chief of The Edge at the awards presentation ceremony last Saturday. “In recognition of this, we have introduced a green category in this year’s awards,” Teoh said.

“We have always wanted to keep the old charm of the house as old houses are usually built with passion, so we wanted to keep that,” said Mrs Leong, the proud owner of the Section 7 house.

Joint Gold Award winner Lee of the Shah Alam house said: “The award is a result of the architect’s unusual ideas.” The unusual curved design of the house is the work of architect Wooi Lok Kuang.

Other winners in the detached/semi-detached category were S C Chin, whose house in Mutiara Damansara received an Honorary Mention, while architect Vincent Lee received a Mention for his home in Section 5, Petaling Jaya.

The other categories were for terraced homes and condominiums.

The Gold Award in the terraced category went to Lim Sue May for her 2-storey terraced home in Subang Jaya, which captivated judges with its open spaces and clean lines. The architect for the home was Chan Mun Inn while the interior designer was Wong Pei San.

Architect Azuan Zakariah’s home in Taman Tun Dr Ismail won a Honorary Mention in the terraced category. There were no winners in the condominium category this year.

The contest was open to homeowners in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor and was held from April to May, 2010.

This is the fourth year of the awards, which is organized by The Edge and haven, the interior design and garden magazine published by the former. It is organized in association with Persatuan Arkitek Malaysia (PAM) and Institut Perekabentuk Dalaman Malaysia (IPDM).

The judges were PAM president Boon Che Wee, IPDM president Mohd Suhaimi Mohd Fadzir, chief creative director of A Cut Above Winnie Loo, haven editor and The Edge’s executive editor property and retailing Au Foong Yee, and The Edge deputy managing director Lim Shiew Yuin.

Winners received business-class tickets to Phuket (Gold Award winners), vouchers from Art Village, IKEA, House of Presentation, Metrojaya and Slumberland, with flowers by Amtrol. The venue sponsor was 1 Utama Shopping Centre. The winning homes’ architects and designers received certificates of recognition.

The full details of the homes and winners will be published in the August/September issue of haven, which will be distributed with the Aug 2 issue of The Edge.
