Townhouse offering is country’s first GBI-certified low-rise residential project

Kuala Lumpur, 26 April 2010
- Sunway City Berhad (Sunway City) has obtained the Green Building Index (GBI) certification for its 2010 residential project Sunway SPK 3 Harmoni.

The GBI is Malaysia’s first comprehensive environmental rating system for buildings developed by Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM) and the Association of Consulting Engineers Malaysia (ACEM). Established in 2008, the GBI evaluates the environmental design and performance of Malaysian buildings based on six key criteria: Energy Efficiency (EE), Indoor Environmental Quality (EQ), Sustainable Site Planning & Management (SM), Material and Resources (MR), Water Efficiency (WE) and Innovation (IN).

The GBI rating tool provides an opportunity for developers and building owners to incorporate into their development, the design and construction of green buildings and site planning that can provide energy and water savings, a healthier indoor and outdoor environment, better connectivity to public transport and the adoption of recycling and sustainable landscaping.

SunCity’s Managing Director for Property Development Division (International) Ngian Siew Siong, said, “This certification is a solid validation of Sunway City’s position as a leading master developer with the expertise to develop quality and innovative properties. It also reflects our commitment to develop eco-friendly and cost-effective projects that promote sustainability and community building.”
Ar.Boon Che Wee, Green Building Index Accreditation Panel Chairman, PAM President; YB Dato' Sri Peter Chin Fah Kui, Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water Malaysia; Mr.Ngian Siew Siong, Managing Director, International, Property Development Division, Sunway City Berhad, Ir. Dr. Abdul Majid b Dato' Abu Kassim, President of The Association of Consulting Engineers Malaysia (ACEM)

“We believe the requirements of the GBI were easily met as we adopted LOHAS concepts into the design and architecture of Sunway SPK 3 Harmoni,” said Ngian.

“Sunway City is a strong advocate of the LOHAS philosophy of ‘Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability. Adopting the LOHAS priorities of environmentally considerate lifestyle choices has ensured that Sunway City’s offerings are consistently translated into quality and comfortable homes,” added Ngian.

“In the case of Sunway SPK 3 Harmoni’s, we are building a clubhouse as a meeting point of relaxation for residents. Landscaped walkways encourage walking, jogging or cycling among residents. In terms of technology, for example, the project uses renewable solar energy to producing hot water for all homes and the application of photovoltaic cell technology to convert solar radiation to electricity at the clubhouse,” added Ngian.

Ngian said that the Group was committed to incorporate the latest technology in its building concepts whenever possible for the benefit of its customers.

Ngian had earlier received the GBI certification on behalf of Sunway City from  Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water, Dato’ Sri Peter Chin Fah Kui, at the launch of the ‘GBI – Existing Building Rating Tool’ at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
