KAMPUNG Kerinchi residents are unhappy over the recent announcent by Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin that 448 units of flats in the area will be rebuilt.

The residents were not happy to read media reports urging them to attend a briefing on the redevelopment of their homes on Friday.

As mentioned by Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik, the briefing was scheduled to be held at Dewan Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sri Pantai, Jalan Kerinchi Kiri, Lembah Pantai, Kuala Lumpur at 8pm.

At the briefing, the residents are also required to select a developer to carry out the reconstruction of the flats.

After careful consideration, the residents in the area voiced out their complaints regarding the early plans made by the Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Ministry.

Residents’ association chairman Ahmad Rahman said the time given to the residents to decide on the reconstruction of their flats was insufficient.

They voiced out that they were given too short a notice to organise and inform all the residents of the area.

“We urge the ministry to postpone the briefing to a later date. Give us more time to contact all the owners here and organise ourselves” said Ahmad.

He added that March 20 would be a more suitable date to hold the briefing and the voting of the developer could be done seven days after that.

“We need time to get everybody together. We simply cannot make a decision on the developer just hours after the briefing. It is only fair that the majority of the flat owners here have a chance to see what the different developers have to offer,” said another resident Lukman Hakim.

As many as four developers are interested in the redevelopment of the Kampung Kerinchi Flats. The tender was opened last November.

The developers will set up an exhibition where the residents can view their proposals for the reconstruction of the flats.

According to the residents, some of the owners of the flats do not occupy the units and it would take time for them to reply to the notice.

The residents association urges unit owners or their next of kin to contact them at 03-2282 6433 over the matter.

The 448 units are in a sorry state and urgently in need of upgrading.

The walls are crumbling and plants have started to take root on the roof of the flats.

Ahmad said there were many previous attempts to redevelop the flats but all were unsuccessful due to the residents’ objections, including the fear that they might lose their units after giving it up for redevelopment.

When the redevelopment starts, the residents will be temporarily moved to nearby City Hall public housing flats at PPR Kerinchi and PPR Pantai Dalam for at least three years.

A total of 116 of the residents urged the ministry to let them move to the City Hall public houses immediately due to the inconveniences.

After reconstructing these flats, the residents will be brought back again to their respective units, right? Then this is actually a great thing. I just don't get why residents objected on the first place.. Hmmm...
