Pontian

Pontian is a district in southwest Johor. It is located 62km from Johor Bahru, the state capital of Johor. The name Pontian is also used in the names of two towns in the district, Pontian Besar and Pontian Kechil, of which the latter serves as its district capital. The capital was formerly a fishing village which has developed into a small town.
 
Pontian is noted for its variety of seafood which is sold at a reasonable price. Visitors from neighbouring towns and Singapore regularly visit Kukup, a fishing village about 20km from Pontian Kechil. Notable national parks in Pontian include Tanjung Piai.
 
Pontian Kechil is situated 1.5 hours (via bus) from Johor Bahru (Capital of Johor State) via Jalan Johor. Other notable towns in Pontian include Ayer Baloi and Benut, north of Pontian Kechil. To the south and east of Pontian Kechil respectively are the towns of Teluk Kerang and Pekan Nanas.
 
Especially along coastal areas, Pontian is populated by Malays of Bugis descent. The Chinese community in Pontian predominantly belongs to the Chaozhou (Teochew) dialect group.
 
This town is also site as the observatory to look for the crescent moon to mark the beginning of Muslim month of Ramadhan, Shawwal, and Zulhijjah, to celebrate fasting month of Ramadhan, Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Hari Raya Aidiladha.
 
The town has a large number of local sightseeing options that attracts tourists from all across the world.The Gunung Pulai Waterfall is one of the biggest natural attractions of this city. The waterfall is located in the Gunung Pulai Recreational Forest. This forest serves as a perfect site for camping, swimming and jungle trekking. In fact, it is the perfect place to go for an adventure holiday. There are other small villages and towns in Pontian where you can also go for a visit like Ayer Baloi and Benut.One can also find a number of museums and shops in. A major area in Pontian, which is worth visiting, is Sungai Peradin. Once a German community is filled with mangrove forests. It is in fact the perfect place to go for bird watching, hence a heaven for bird lovers.Kampung Belokok, a small village located over here is filled with the remains of buildings, rail tracks and huge concrete slabs, which serve as evidences of the existence of the German community.
 
Pontian, Johor is particularly known for its seafood. There are a number of restaurants that offers excellent seafood, especially those in Kampung Belokok. The town also has a coastal area, which is occupied by the Malaya of Bugis descent.

Pontian also serves as an observatory to view the crescent moon, which marks the beginning of the Muslim month of Ramadhan.
