Tanjung Malim

Tanjung Malim is a town in the state of Perak, Malaysia. It is approximately 70 km (43 mi) north of Kuala Lumpur via the North-South Expressway. It lies on the Perak-Selangor state border, with Sungai Bernam serving as the natural divider.

Today, "Tanjung Malim" usually refers to the territory under administration of Tanjung Malim District Council or Majlis Daerah Tanjung Malim (MDTM), which includes the smaller towns adjacent to the town such as Proton City, Behrang, Behrang 2020, Sungkai and Slim River. "Tanjung Malim" is lately also referred to the Old Town and New Town divided by the KTM Komuter rail at its heart, from which the town grew. Commuter train services from Tanjung Malim has started since 1 June 2009.

A picturesque town which is fast showing signs of modernisation and new development, Tanjung Malim is well known among the teaching and circles of Malaysia for the presence of the Sultan Idris Teachers' Training College (Institut Pendidikan Sultan Idris), a teacher-training college noted for having produced members of the teaching profession who either become teachers of students who later rose to national importance or who themselves acquired national significance of one sort or another.

Named after the late Sultan Idris, during whose reign many important events took place in Perak, the college is housed in a grand building of British colonial design. Its distinctiveness architecturally has made it a well-known landmark in Tanjung Malim, of being an institute of the teaching profession not only in Perak but indeed for the whole nation.

The Training College was then upgraded in 1997 to form the current Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) and was officially open on May 1, 1997.  The University is specialised in teacher training and all education related courses.  Its main objective is to fulfill the current needs of the educational field in Malaysia. To city dwellers, Tanjung Malim in Perak holds nothing significant for them besides being a stop over town as they head for Ipoh, Penang or Alor Star. Now, with the North-South Expressway, even the stops have diminished altogether.
