Hi everyone, i'm sure all of you dream about to make your house look stunning. Let's follow this simple how-to to help you choose a color scheme for your home. Learn to mix colors and fabrics and how to repeat color throughout the room. Read some of the principles of decorating and learn how to use coordinating fabrics and dressmaker details.

1. First, choose a style (formal or casual) and a theme for your room (such as American country, English garden, techno modern).

2. With the style and theme in mind, decide on an 'anchor' fabric that has 3 or more colors.

3. Use the background color from the fabric as a wall color.

4. Pick a mid-toned color from the fabric for flooring and large furniture pieces, which could be a solid or patterned design. Upholstery can also be done in your anchor fabric or coordinating fabric.

5. Use the brightest colors from the fabric for accessories and accents like welting, picture mats, and decorative pillows.

6. Place your anchor fabric in at least three places in the room (upholstery, pillows, curtains, etc).

7. Use coordinating fabrics in other scales (larger or smaller) as accent fabrics on chairs, pillows, cording, and tablecloths.

8. For example, to use an 'anchor' fabric with an American flag design: use white (the background color) for walls, navy (a mid-toned color) on floor, blue and white ticking on the sofa, and red (the brightest color) for accessories and accents.

9. To continue this example, the coordinated prints could be the blue and white ticking stripe, a navy star print fabric, and a red and white mini-check used on chairs, curtains, and pillows.

Tips:

1. Repeat colors evenly throughout the room, and in at least 3 places.

2. Adding dressmaker details in cording and trims is one way to disperse color and add interest.

3. Divide color use to approximately 60% of the room in the background (lightest) color, 30% in the mid-tone color, and 10% in the brightest, accent colors.

Happy coloring...

Wow! a very informative guide here. Is this suitable for any type of house? How about a small house, is there any color scheme that can make it looks larger?

i'm agreed with Cecilia. Using the bright colors can make the small room look bigger. Beside using color to control the space of your home, mirror also can make that sense of big space. Please take in mind als when choose the furniture for your house.Make sure the furniture suit your space area. Don't mess around with big furniture in the small space. The great idea is to buy a small furniture and with practical usage.

Hi Marlon Brando,

Your info is very useful and simple to apply.

My new link house is obtaining OC in end of this year. I have not much budget so I plan to design it myself with your concept. First of all, the floor tile is of light-tea color with stripes (dirty - you can imagine it, right?)

What style would you suggest to me. I have no stong persoanal taste in fact. May be you be my online designer? Are you designer by profession? Anyway, I will be grateful if anyone can help because I am not artistic and do not know where to get stuffs. Ikea? I intend to drive down to Ikea this Chinese New Year one week holiday to buy accessories ? Any suggestions for shopping. I believe we have more choices in KL than Penang where I stay now.

Wish you a nice weekend.

Warmest Regards,
Leang Niu

Hi AL Tan,

Congratulations for your new property. Can you tell me generally about your house? Is it intermediate house or corner lot? I can help you as much as possible. For small space, choosing the simple pattern and any intermediate dark brown color tile can give some breath taking space with bright colors for wall. Please avoid the tile with big and messy pattern. You can refer to ‘Color Chart’ when choosing the right paint for wall. You also can highlight the wall with other paint to make your space look great (mix& match concept). This is the ideal way when you have tight budget when you have limited price for wallpapers. The concept and design always depends on budget and wants. Some people like their house look simple and practical with modern touch or some natural mood like traditional Thai, Bali or English concept. For those who have a tight budget, they still can decorate their house partially and not in hurry. They can give some kick start at their living and dining room where the common space to live. It can give you some idea when you want to continue to other spaces.

Ikea is the best place for modern cuts and stylish furniture. Ikea customer service also can help you to find right furniture for your house. Just bring along the plan with dimension and tell them what concept and theme do you want. I’m sure they can assist you to find your dream furniture.
